The NCAD video collection is one of the many treasures in the NCAD Library. The collection has been in existence from the late 1980s, and currently consists of over 2000 titles, comprising artists’ videos and documentaries on all aspects of art and design, as well as feature films. Highlights of our collection include the 37 episodes of Hands, the RTE series on Irish traditional crafts; Herman Nitsch’s 8-disc set of Des Orgien Mysterien Theaters; the 12-disc set of 40yearsvideoart.de, a survey of video art in Germany from 1963 to the present; Werner Nekes’ 5-disc set Media Magica; the National Film Board of Canada’s Norman McLaren – The Master’s Edition, Raro Video’s Andy Warhol Anthology, and videos by and about artists such as Bill Viola, Matthew Barney, Valie Export, Vivienne Dick, Louise Bourgeois and many others. We also have landmark television series on the history of art such as Kenneth Clark’s Civilisation and Robert Hughes’ Shock of the New.
The collection is now searchable in the NCAD library’s online catalogue. To search for titles in DVD format, type in your keyword and add the word ‘videorecording’. The results will show all video or DVD titles related to that particular topic. Students can borrow up to four items at a time, usually for one week. Titles on course viewing lists are available for two days.
